Preschool Curriculum
Why Preschool at The Laurel School?
At Laurel we understand that every child is unique, and so every child is recognized, understood, and cared for as an equal, vital part of an inclusive community. Within our preschool classroom, our educators meet the child’s needs and support children with our early learning program that stimulates them intellectually. During these early years, it is essential to prepare children for the future through our balanced education engaging in both play and academics. By the time our students enter grade one, they are typically reading at a grade three level, which is something that inspires confidence, not only in themselves, but within their families and educators too.
Curriculum Focus
Using our award winning programs and rich language environment, these methods work side by side to promote learning opportunities for children to master literacy and cognitive skills. Our specialized literacy program includes both one on one and small group learning.
Our program is designed to support children in the real world through eating correctly at the table, independently dressing, feeding oneself, and going to the washroom independently! Our toddlers also learn about health and safety, food and nutrition and to develop the ability to engage in meaningful, positive social interactions with their peers.
Children are explorers! Our program provides children with the tools to explore the world around them through cause & effect relationships, spatial exploration, sensorial activities and documentation of their findings.
Our program allows children to visualize through imagination and creativity. Through our wide range of materials from musical instruments to painting with tools, children are able to explore and create their own masterpieces!
Through our balanced approach, children are able to develop a strong foundation of emotional well-being and social competence in order to take these tools with them throughout life, covering topics such as problem solving, emotional regulation, expression of feelings, mindfulness and learning how to make good choices.
The early years are a crucial time frame where children develop communication and language skills that grow at a rapid pace. For our toddlers learning to communicate, we specialize in speech and language development providing the tools necessary for your child to verbally express themselves, beginning with sign language, labeling and vocabulary enhancement within the environment.
Early experiences are key to developing children’s skills. Our hands on mathematics program introduces number sense, measurement, patterns, and problem solving skills.
Our toddlers are immersed early on through a variety of topics such as the neighborhood, different types of buildings, community helpers and around the world!
Through our dedicated Wonder Room, Outdoor Play spaces and WOW Garden, children are able to explore, tumble and fall with our deep padded & safe turf flooring. This includes balancing, climbing, running, and riding, your child will never miss a beat of fun!
With the importance of developing fine motor skills, our program immerses children in learning these skills through consistent tool use, pincer grip, and artistic materials. As children develop through our program, they will develop skills in order to color within the lines, print letters in the correct formation and print words from left to right!
